1st day: Marrakech – Dades Gorges
Start your Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip by morning departure from your accommodation in Marrakech. Travel over the high Atlas Mountains and via the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass, the highest peak in Africa.
From the summits of these mountains, the views of the green valleys and the adobe-built Berber villages perched on the mountains are spectacular.
You continue to descend the Atlas Mountains as far as Ouarzazate. After lunch, a side road leads to Skoura Oasis, full of palm trees, and fortified Kasbahs. Visit the beautifully repaired Kasbah Amredhil and tour its small museum, featuring ancient agriculture tools and housing furniture.
Driving further east, you travel through the Road of a Thousand kasbahs, remarkable for its fortified Kasbah nestled among the palm trees. After a stop in the Valley of the Roses, you continue to Kel’aa M’gouna, where you can visit local cooperatives, producing cosmetic products from the beautiful flowers of the valley.
By the end of the afternoon, you will arrive at Dades Gorges. Here, a beautiful guest-house at the edge of the valley offers dinner and night’s rest.
2nd day: Dades Gorges – Merzouga
After breakfast, enjoy a walk by the Boumalne Dades Valley and explore the green fields and the local agriculture. Next, you continue to the much talked about Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga via the Toudgha Gorges.
Here, you can take a walk alongside the river and through the massive canyons of Tinghir before having lunch in a restaurant overlooking the massive canyons. In the afternoon, your Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip continues to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi along the Ziz Valley, well known for its huge palm trees groves.
Here in Merzouga, an hour to an hour and a half camel ride leads to the dunes of Erg Chebbi (250m). From the top of these towering dunes, the sunset and the views are spectacular and the tranquility is immersive.
At the campsite near the big dunes, you will be welcomed by traditional mint tea and Moroccan biscuits. At night, dinner is served under a sky full of stars, followed by a musical play and Berber drumming. A comfortable nomad tent offers a night’s rest.
3rd day: Merzouga – Ouarzazate
If you wake up early in the morning, you can climb to the summit of the high dunes to admire the sunrise. After breakfast in the camp, your desert trip continues from Erg Chebbi dunes to Ouarzazate via Berber villages of Rissani, Alnif, Tazzarine, and N’Qob which will be the venue for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will visit Kasbah Tamnougalte, the oldest kasbah in the region, and is still partly inhabitant. Shortly after, you go off-road through the Dra’a Valley’s unlimited palm trees and along fortified kasbahs towards Agdez.
After a break in Agdz, you cross the Middle Atlas Mountains and arrive at Ouarzazate. Here, an authentic and beautiful raid offers dinner and overnight.
4th day: Ouarzazate – Marrakech
After breakfast in your riad, you continue your Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip. Stop by the Film Studios to photograph the intact film sets of many Hollywood cinematic artworks.
Shortly after, a side road leads to Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou. This is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the most famous kasbah in Morocco. You will visit the kasbah with a local guide who will provide great insight into the history of this site and points out interesting features.
Afterward, travel alongside the beautiful Ounila Valley and Berber villages. After lunch, you will visit Kasbah Telouet, remarkable for its artwork tiling and wood craftsmanship.
In the afternoon, you cross the high Atlas Mountains and drive through Berber villages. You will arrive back at Marrakech by the end of the day.
