1st day: Marrakech – Erg Chagaga Dunes
Kick-off your Marrakech to Erg Chigaga by morning departure from to Erg Chagaga dunes. Travel across the High Atlas Mountains and drive via the fascinating pass of Tizi-n-Tichka.
After descending the Atlas Mountains, a side road leads you to Taznakht, well-known for its Berber carpets and rugs craftsmanship.
From here, you continue to Foum Zguid, the last village before the desert, and the venue for lunch. In the afternoon, we make our way across 100km through the varying features of the Sahara Desert; ‘erg’, ‘reg’, ‘hammada’, oases, to Erg Chagaga Dunes.
These towering dunes are 300 m high, stretch for 45km long, and are the largest in Morocco. After a relaxing glass of tea and Moroccan biscuits in the camp, there is time to experience a camel trek for one to one hour and a half.
Then, you can go for a walk in the wind-blown sand dunes and ascend the Erg Chagaga to watch the sunset from the summit (300m). At night, the night will be spent in a nomad tent, which is also the venue for dinner.
2nd day: Erg Chagaga Dunes – Ouarzazate
After breakfast, our Marrakech to Erg Chigaga takes us to M’hamid, the first village after the desert, through another 65km of off-track driving. From here, the drive back to Zagora for lunch is along paved roads via the villages and valleys.
In Tamegroute village, you will visit the green pottery workshops and the ancient Koranic Library. After lunch in Zagora, the road leads north again along the Dra’a valley’s huge palm groves and fortified kasbahs, followed by some off-road driving through the ancient Road of Caravans.
Just before Agdz, you will visit Kasbah Tamnougalte. It is the oldest kasbah in the region and is still partly inhabited. By the end of the afternoon, Ouarzazate offers dinner and an overnight in a beautiful guest-house.
3rd day: Ouarzazate – Marrakech
After breakfast, we drive from Ouarzazate to Marrakesh. After a 30 min drive from Ouarzazate, a side road leads to Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou.
It is one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage sites in Morocco and is also well-known as being the backdrop to many Hollywood blockbusters.
You will visit the kasbah with a local guide who will inform you about the history and the cinematic artworks that were filmed here.
From here, the itinerary continues along the beautiful Ounila Valley with beautiful and prosperous Berber villages, admirably high Atlas Mountains. Shortly after, you will arrive at Kasbah Telouet, very remarkable for its Moroccan tiling and wood craftsmanship.
